Sustainable happiness

Let's start with an example.

I love travelling. When I travel, I am the happiest person in the world.

But then, what happens when a trip comes to an end?

Easy: I need another trip :)

May I say that travelling is sustainable happiness?

Unfortunately, no: because I always need one more trip to feel okay. And I strongly perceive the difference between travelling (with all the adrenaline related) and not travelling (the absence of that adrenaline).

What about the person I become after every trip? After every trip, I bring with me the new "me" with all the knowledge and enrichment I got from each trip experience. All those resources are always within me, and I can access them every time. The person I become after every trip is sustainable happiness? Definitely yes. Maybe I need another trip and another trip and another to enlarge my horizons, but those resources I have are always present, and I don't feel the absence if I don't travel.

Sustainable happiness is rooted in long-term sources of joy and well-being. It involves cultivating practices and habits that contribute to overall life satisfaction, such as fostering meaningful relationships, pursuing personal growth and development, engaging in activities aligned with one's values, and contributing to the well-being of others and the world at large. Sustainable happiness tends to be enduring as it is not solely dependent on external circumstances but rather on internal factors and attitudes.

On the other hand, unsustainable happiness is often based on short-term gratification or external validation. It may involve seeking happiness through material possessions, status, or fleeting experiences that provide temporary pleasure but do not contribute to long-term well-being. Unsustainable happiness is often fragile, as it relies on external factors that are subject to change and may not bring lasting fulfillment.

Striving for sustainable happiness involves cultivating a holistic approach to well-being that encompasses physical, emotional, social, and spiritual dimensions of life, leading to a more fulfilling and meaningful existence in the long run.

In the context of the career world, the discussed concept refers to a sense of well-being even in the face of challenges and setbacks. It involves finding meaning and satisfaction in one's work that goes beyond short-term gratification or external rewards and is rooted in aligning one's work with personal values and a sense of purpose. When individuals feel that their work contributes to something meaningful and aligns with their core beliefs, they are more likely to experience long-term satisfaction.

Engaging in coaching provides an opportunity to explore and cultivate sustainable happiness in our lives. Moreover, coaching empowers to navigate challenges and setbacks with resistance and optimism. By tapping into their inner resources and strengths, coachees build a solid foundation, finding contentment and meaning in both their personal and professional endeavors.
