When Things Go Well, When Things Go Wrong

Have you ever felt that everything is going well?

And then, at another time, that everything is going wrong?

Sometimes, I used to think that the planets were aligning, and what was working in one area of my life magically influenced other areas, creating a contagious optimism.

But what happens when things go wrong? Do the planets lose their alignment, and does someone start to dislike us?

It's not as easy or direct in terms of cause and effect.

I used to think that there are things we have more control over, and others where our control is limited.

In any case, regardless of the events' course, we might still have some level of control. Here's what I've discovered from my experience in coaching, navigating the complexities of our experiences, both positive and negative.

Let's step in:

Reflection and Celebration: After achieving a milestone, reflecting on the journey and celebrating the accomplishment is crucial. A coach can help individuals appreciate their achievements, acknowledge their hard work, and gain clarity about what contributed to their success.

Setting New Reachable Goals: Success often inspires individuals to set new, higher goals. Here, you can be assisted in defining these goals, breaking them down into manageable steps, and creating actionable plans to reach them.

Maintaining Balance: Amid success, maintaining work-life balance and avoiding burnout becomes essential. Clients are guided in managing their newfound responsibilities and staying grounded.

On the other side, failures, and disappointments are inevitable parts of life. These experiences can be emotionally tough and overwhelming but they also present valuable learning opportunities. Here's where coaching can be a guiding light:

Emotional Resistance: Dealing with failures can evoke intense emotions. A coach provides a safe space to process these feelings, helping individuals build emotional resistance and learn from them.

Analyzing Failures: Facilitating an objective examination of what went wrong. Through structured analysis, individuals can identify the factors that led to the setback and strategize for future success.

Fostering a Growth Mindset: Promoting a shift in perspectives from a fixed mindset ("I failed, I'm a failure") to a growth mindset ("I can learn and improve from this situation, learning new abilities"). This change in attitude encourages self-compassion and taking your own time.

Whichever situation you're in now, the legend of King Solomon's "This too shall pass" helps me reflect on how both good and bad times are temporary (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/This_too_shall_pass).

In these ups and downs, coaching acts as a constant companion, offering guidance and support when things go well and when things go wrong. Like an alchemist, you can turn successes into stepping stones and failures into valuable lessons. So, whether you're riding the wave of success or facing the storm of setbacks, consider enlisting the help of a coach to navigate the journey with clarity, peace of mind, and lucidity.
