The Significance of Addressing Your Needs in a Coaching Perspective
Have you ever thought: "What are my needs?" Great question! And "How can this environment satisfy them?" Another great one.
Let's take penguins and put them in the desert. Or camels and put them in Antarctica. Would these be two environments that suit our friends, camels, and penguins? Hmm.
So, why is it that simple for animals and not for humans? Simple, humans are complex systems that are part of other complex systems, namely culture, family, society, trends, models, history, and politics. We are so far from that simplicity, and a huge challenge of our times is to navigate this complexity and find our own environment.
Many individuals turn to coaching to identify their needs. Needs are the fundamental drivers that shape our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. They can be physical, emotional, psychological, or spiritual in nature. Identifying them allows you to gain clarity on what truly matters to you and what motivates your actions.
Satisfying your needs is closely connected to aligning with your core values. When you live in alignment with your values, you experience a greater sense of purpose and fulfillment. A skilled coach can help you explore both and integrate them into your personal and professional life, leading to a more authentic and meaningful existence. This process also allows you to gain insights into your strengths, weaknesses, and limiting beliefs, recognize patterns that may hold you back, and empowers you to make positive changes for personal growth.
Addressing your needs provides valuable tools for overcoming challenges and obstacles. Through an action plan specifically tailored to your needs, you can increase your resilience and adaptability in the face of adversity.
Prioritizing this aspect contributes to overall well-being and mental health. Ignoring or neglecting it can lead to stress, anxiety, and even burnout. By taking care of yourself, you create a foundation for a balanced and fulfilling life.
I propose a game: let's ask ourselves three times per day - morning, afternoon, evening - this question: "What do I need now?" The first time I asked this question myself, I felt like a new world opened in front of me. I had the chance to really take care of myself in that moment and, first of all, listen to myself. Sometimes we are more able to listen to others' needs, losing that connection with ourselves.
And this is the magic that happens in a coaching setting. You are at the center and have the chance to bring your internal world outside, in a safe environment where you are allowed to be your true self. This may be where your needs will be expressed for the first time in your life within a specific conversation that has the power to empower you. And, funnily enough, you'll talk for most of the time with a coach who is there to listen actively and ask questions.
